Allerton Primary School, Year 6 aged 10 to 11, have been exploring various aspects of different African countries. In the widest sense the children have worked on similarities and differences between their lives, and lifestyles, and those of various individuals and/or communities in Uganda, Lesotho and Nigeria.
Issues about culture and sustainabilty, including environmental change, have been studied and reflected upon, culminating in work on global warming and its impact and what action can be taken.
The work was spread over the summer term. The "Creative Curriculum " used in most English primary schools allows for topics or themes to be the vehicle through which a range of subjects can be covered.

The Key Stage 1 teacher from this school participated in the Benin Study visit and has delivered this Scheme of Work (SOW) is an outcome of this experience. This planning should be combined with other elements which are saved separately; Introduction to Africa; World Traveller; Passport template1 & 2; Ticket-holiday; weather around the world; Handa's Surprise,Fruit Tally Chart.
The young children role played as much of the travelling as they could, including being on the plane with the staff being in the stewards, hostesses etc.

This document was sent home with the child so that the parent or carer would be involved in the learning and describes the process of making a Passport and the work in which it will be used.
The passport template and Passport2 are part of this process and are uploaded separately.

This file features a map of the continent of Africa and a description of the work that will be covered in the over-all Scheme of Work (SOW) Africa & Benin. The SOW covers Geography, Literacy,science,Maths, ICT.
