Leeds Development Education Centre was set up by Oxfam in 1978 to promote a greater understanding of global development issues to young people and adults. Based in Leeds the DEC seeks to support teachers and youth workers across West Yorkshire to bring a global dimension to their work.
What is development education?
Development Education aims to help people develop their understanding of the links between their own lives and those of other people throughout the world. Development Education activities explore the economic, social, political and environmental forces that shape our lives, and examine the interplay between local, national and international issues, processes and events.
What we do
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
Leeds DEC works with schools to develop strategies to improve the delivery of the global dimension in the school curriculum.
The centre collaborates with educators across the UK, Europe and the global South to develop and publish guidance and active-learning materials for schools and youth groups on a range of topical global issues, including Fair Trade, Global Citizenship, Sustainable Development, Human Rights and Social Justice and Diversity.
