School focus
Modern languages:

  • Pupils on the lower level learn English and they have the choice between French and Latin – the latter is a requirement for several studies in Austria . On the upper level, from the fifth year onwards, they learn either a modern foreign language such as Italian, Spanish and Russian or Latin in addition to the second foreign language (starting in the third year)
  • We prepare our pupils for extra language exams: Cambridge Certificate and DELF / DALF
  • Intensive language courses abroad: Great Britain, France and elsewhere

School history

  • 1878: Decision to permit the foundation of a state secondary school in the 4th district
  • 1891: Decision in favour of building a public grammar school in the 5th district with 12 classrooms
  • 1894: Opening Ceremony
  • 1895: Elisabeth-Gymnasium, May 7: K.K. Elisabeth-Gymnasium
  • 1918: The building of a grammar school in the 5th district of Vienna gets under way
  • 1929: Bundesgymnasium und Realgymnasium Wien V
  • 1929: 50th Anniversary Celebration
  • 1938: Second World War: The first and the second floor of the school building are used as emergency accommodation, the hall and the gymnasiums as storerooms.
  • 1945: The school building is hit by a bomb, destroying everything but the hall.
  • 1951: Restoration of the school building, classes are taken up again
  • 1978: 100th Anniversary Celebration of Rainergymnasium in the large hall of the Viennese Musikverein with an exhibition about the school
  • 1993-1999: Different projects: “Das Globale Dorf” (“The Global Village”),
  • “Einfälle statt Abfälle” (“ideas instead of waste”), “Frauenwahlrecht”
  •  (“female  suffrage”)
  • Since 2006: The school project “Kulturtage” takes place every year

What we want to tell about our school
Generally speaking, it is the task of a Gymnasium (AHS) to give pupils a comprehensive and in-depth general education and to prepare them for university studies. Academic secondary schools issue a secondary school leaving certificate (Reifeprüfung, Matura) which provides access to university studies.

Our school offers many opportunities beyond the classroom for the pupils to extend their learning, their understanding and their social skills and to encourage their creativity. There is a wide range of elective subjects:

  • Sports
  • Special classes in the core subjects for pupils with special needs
  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)
  • Internet security for kids
  • IKT (Information and Communication Technology)
  • Mediation and conflict management (Helpteam)
  • Musical and dancing
  • Study skills (Lerntechnik) focusing on different learning types and self-directed learning

There is also a strong focus on social and international projects such as “72 Stunden”, “cuisine international” (French and Art), “Who am I” (English, Music and Art, in cooperation with the Vienna International School) and student exchange programmes with Hungary and France.

War: What good is it for?

One World Day. (Brudenell Primary School, Leeds) Students from Politics, Law and Geography Departments of the University of Leeds worked with Year 6 children from Brudenell Primary School on the topic: “War, what good is it?” from the 3 different department perspectives. The children were studying World War 2 as their topic and this event enabled them to reflect further on the reasons for and the results of wars. The day the children spent at the University with the students was a culmination of work done in school with them, in their school . Each slide on the 3 power-points relating to Politics, Law and Geography, is the result of an individual child’s work or a pair working together For all the presentations click on the link.

The pupils of St. Benedict's Primary School in Leeds have done a lengthy studuy of black gold:oil- how it is formed, who produces it and consumes it.
