School history
The foundation of BRG 6 Marchettigasse dates back to the middle of the 19th century: on 19 November 1852 the municipal council decided to set up a lower secondary school, comprising three grades, in Gumpendorf, a Vienna suburb at that time. The plan to extend the lower section of the school by adding three upper grades made it necessary to find a new location. Finally, construction work was started on a site in Marchetti Street, which had been a cemetery to a nearby hospital up to 1790. The inauguration of the new building took place on 19 September 1881. Incidentally, the lay-out of this building, which encloses an inner yard (see image 2), has been maintained up to the present day. In the first half of the 20th century, school history was a chequered one due to the turmoil of the two world wars. In 1961 and 1972 extensive renovation work and improvements of facilities were carried out. A canteen and afternoon facilites were set up in 1981, enabling students to stay on after classes have finished (usually at 2 pm). The excellent quality of the school’s afternoon programme, comprimising sports, study time and workshops, has been certified twice by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Culture and Arts. In 2003, school authorities agreed to a complete refurbishment of the building, including an extension of the premises by special-purpose areas, two underground gym halls and additional class rooms. These works were successfully completed two years later and have made BRG 6 Marchettigasse one of the most modern schools in Vienna.
Other points of interest
Emphasis in our school as far as social communication is concerned is laid on mutual respect between students and teachers and the fostering of democratic values and socially responsible behaviour. Committment and respect are therefore key factors marking school life at Marchettigasse. What also contributes essentially to a positive teaching climate is the school’s relatively small size, which allows to address students’ needs effectively. The school’s participation in the ‘Global Curriculum Project’ is expected to provide students with new insights into global cultural diversity, thus enriching their personal experience and broadening their horizons.
